The Oscar-winning director of “The French Connection” and “The Exorcist,” William Friedkin, was born in Chicago on August 29, 1939. He started in charge of live performances when he was 16 years old. As a young adult, Friedkin started his career acting in local TV shows.
Friedkin turned from live performances to documentaries in 1962 after shooting “The People Versus Paul Crump.” It was the story of a man on death row who changed his life after being given the death penalty for the murder of a security guard who had foiled a failed robbery attempt at a Chicago food industry.
It so enthralled producer David Wolper that he sent Friedkin to Hollywood to oversee network TV shows. The star of the program was the musical duo Sonny and Cher, who would feature in just one movie together.
Then he performed two plays: “The Birthday Party,” which is adapted from a Harold Pinter play, and “The Night They Raided Minsky’s,” which is based on the behind-the-scenes operations of a burlesque theatre. The landmark homosexual men’s film “The Boys in the Band,” released in 1970, garnered praise from critics. In the 1970s, Friedkin became well-known for his diverse filmmaking methods, and after the release of “The Exorcist,” he significantly changed the horror subgenre.
